[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Oct-02 AT 09:16 AM (EST)]My 95 EB had the old familiar clunk when starting and stopping. I took it in to two different mechanics who originally thought it needed the standard treatment of greasing the slip joint, but then told me that wasn't the problem. They both spent time under the truck, with someone rolling it back and forth over them, but could not figure this out. Maybe bad motor mounts, maybe the diff, maybe this, maybe that. Everything eventually ruled out as cause. Finally, I had one of them just grease the whole drive line, but it didn't help. Transmission and drive line were checking out just fine, but it looked like I was going to have to live with this clunk.
Last week, speedometer stopped working and transmission started kicking badly at every shift. But on the way to shop for diagnosis, speedo started working and transmission smooth again. Pulled the codes and it came up speed sensor. Since the part was only $17 at the Ford dealer, I had the mechanic put in a new one, just to rule that out if speedo goes out again.
And now - no clunk! Every now and then I feel a light clunk on takeoff, but nothing near as hard as before, and nothing when stopping. Also, may be my imagination, but truck feels smoother and more powerful. I hate to jinx this by reporting, but maybe this can help someone who can't get rid of that old familiar feeling.
