My dad has a 2006 F150 FFV. On gas, it gets 15mpg in summer, no winter figures yet. On E85, it will get 13-14mpg in summer, and 11-12mpg in winter. It seems to drive the same and have equal power on E85 as it does on gas. Considering the price difference here, we have been coming out ahead. We have been running E85 almost exclusively in it since it was new, and it now has about 13,800 miles.

Well that was short lived because I just used the one tankful of E85. They are playing games because it costs just as much as regular unleaded with the exception of a few cents less.
It did seem like I got less MPG on that tankful. I have determined that it is not worth it at least right at this point to run E85 on a regular basis. That was a short and sweet test.

The economists you are quoting are citing a peer reviewed scientific journal article that did a mass energy balance for producing feed corn based ethanol. They took into account the(in no order):
fertilizer
fuel to transport corn
fuel to grow corn
fuel/energy to produce ethanol from corn
AND
the solar energy necessary for the corn plant to grow to maturity.
Do you see a problem in this? Using thier method sure, corn based ethanol is a net energy loss, but when was the last time the govt. was able to send a W-2 to the Sun and get money back?

maybe i am wrong here but i think we are trying to go in the right direction with alt. fuels e85 may not be the end all solution but it's the first step in trying to reduce the dependance on oil the big oil companies are doing everything they can to throw one in us so lets explore some possibilities an see were it takes us just a few thought of fool.

The first year for the FFV was 2006, and it was a late shift in december of production. That means about half of all 2006 5.4L 3V motors are FFV, the other are not. Depends on your production date. Others have already informed you of the benefits/loss of using Ethanol. In my opinion, not worth the time. No savings noted in other vehicles.

It may not be worth your time right now to use Ethanol, but just wait until Gas prices get back up over $3 a gallon and Ethanol is still $2 a gallon or lower.
So there may come that time you find it is worth your time.
