I just purchased a brand new 2007 Ford E350 van for conversion to a 4x4 camper. I got a call from the conversion company a couple of days ago saying that the transmission had a rattle at speeds of about 60 mph and that they were sending the van back to the Ford dealer to determine the source of the rattle. I talked to the dealer today and the service manager said that they determined that a planetary gear assembly had "broken" and that they were ordering parts for repair. They said that they saw no metal filings when they opened the inspection cover. The van conversion company reported that Ford accepted responsibility for the problem
I have decided to insist to both the Ford dealer and the van conversion company to replace the original transmission with a new transmission. Afterall, the vehicle is new and I haven't taken delivery yet. I feel that there are too many potential problems connected with fixing the original transmission.
The Ford dealer service manager has already balked at replacing the transmission with a new one and said he would have to go to a higher authority to get approval. I haven't heard back from him.
Any thoughts on the pros and cons of insisting on a new transmission vs. a repaired transmission. I've waited 4 months to get this far along in the Ford van conversion process so I hope they will agree to replace the tranny.
