My '66 F250 has this problem. The alternator tested good, replaced the regulator, and field relay ( w/ a horn relay that looks the same phisically), and the idiot light stays lit. It actually brightens when the engine is revved.
A multimeter at the battery tells me that I have 13.83 - 14.03 volts coming into the battery. I'm stumped. Any ideas?
Bruce
Have you disconnected the relay from the altenator, ran a jumper, and checked for the light? Run the jumper from the starter soleniod to figure out if it is the wire coming from the altenator. Check for a short in the wiring to and from the relay or a grounded wire in the dash.
I have the exact same problem in my '64. I have concluded that the universal ignition switch installed by the previous owner is the culprit. I'll be installing a Ford correct ignition switch as soon as spring arrives. Check your ignition switch connections.
Bruce;
I'm no electrical troubleshooting guy;(Airharley advice will always over ride mine) but I have had a similiar problem in the past; it was the voltage regulator on the front radiator brace; that was out on my 66 to cause the same problem.
As for Jethro1; those 64 & below 6 volts a hold different playing field for me with those resistor's.
