The rebirth of the FE is looking better every day with intrest,
weight isn't a problem on an aluminum block, strength is.
Two things I see that I don't like, 1st the plate in the valley
allowing for seal failure as well reduced block strength, 2nd I
would rather have a cross bolted main bearing block.
For a daily driven 482 i'll take an iron block. JMO's.
well I don't like it! the things I see wrong are the lack of a deep skirt , possible over heating with the reduced cooling passages and no way to cross bolt it.
LMAO!!! I had to overcome my own prejudice when I looked at the model. We trade off the deep skirt for a crank girdle. It will fit the stock heads, intakes, and bellcranks; and everything else? Yeah, it looks kinda chebbie. No, I don't think I would take it for a day-long drive.
Just the fact that there are covers in the galley opens the potential for leakage. It also limits the possibility for reinforcement above the cam tunnel. Too bad, then you'd only have to worry about the crank.
Since they are going for light all around, I'm guessing the future owners will need clean underwear before they can break it. Just how much do those Shelby aluminimum blocks weigh?
I do appreciate the craftsmanship! Did you guys see that sheet metal? WOWSA!!! 56K BEWARE!
It would be a flat out crime to drive one of those in the weeds!
David Kirkham is very good at what he does. Their cars alone speak for their quality and craftsmanship. They made a few copper Cobra's too!! If I'm reading things right the girdle/caps all go on/off in one piece. Inspried by F1 design. Be it what it is... it will be embraced and welcomed by many FE and Cobra guys. I think he's a little under the money at $4995 for the block. Some project a bit more by the time it's done. I agree. And I'm sure it'll look better in billet than wood right now..LOL. Shelby, Dove, Pond, Genesis and now Kirkham. I'd hate to think what the cost of a oem 427 block would be at these days without these guys. 3-4 ago I remember NOS 427 blocks selling for $8500 on epay. But they say the Kirkham block is 79 lbs but not sure if that includes the girdle/cap assy. The Shelby block is 130lbs with the caps. Pond aluminum is 150 with caps. As a comparison I've heard the iron Genesis blocks weigh 250 lbs.
Art there is a great thread on Club Cobra in the "All Cobra Talk" section about the block. Some 150+ posts and lots of good information. I've only read about half so far. The last was a post from David that Keith Craft had weighed a stock iron 427, stock iron FE and posted is the weight of those plus every aftermarket block they have in house. LOL the iron Genesis is the fatty of the bunch at 258 lbs!! Mine felt every bit as heavy bringing it downstairs too!
Here are the possted weights....
Original Ford 427 topoiler block....204 lbs.
Original Ford FE block (390,428 etc...) 183 lbs.
Shelby aluminum 427 133 lbs.
Pond aluminum 427 119 lbs.
Pond iron 427 236 lbs.
Genesis iron 427 258 lbs.
Oh and a 351 Dart aluminum thown in there at 100.8 lbs.
All weights include the maincaps be it iron or steel.
Oh Crying, Crying over my Block..Roy Orbeson?? 2 Block's I got rid of over Family needs... My 427 Pond. and the IDT Premier block!!! Brother 's NEVER agian.. I laid somelaw down to the wife tonight....and I'am gonna take her out for a Mexi-Grunt Dinner..and Margies..this weekend..It time..To either put the F#$K up or Shut the F$%K up..I'am not getting any younger!!
And G, YOU know where I'am coming from...I just made a dealtonight with a guy that doesnt know ***** about fords..I will do his rebuilds..for the next year..."IF" he pays off the small loan on my house!! and G, you know that aint much!!
So after that..the shopand siding and then my Hotrods!! LOL..
LOL.. Oh you guys are killing me!! About the Cooling on the Kirkham block..if you notice the bulges on the side of the block..thats extra cooling....But I'am sure that there will be alot of refinement in the month's and even years to come as with the Shelby,Pond, Genessis, etc... There all better than stock blocks..IMO...
Hey freight yo talking about that Chabby crap again?
Been there done that with broken chebbie motors hence FE's in my life.
Nine years ago sold a 27K mile 70 429 w/C-6 as I couldn't switch over
from FE's.
Sorry had to spout off, I feel better now.
