im' working on a buds '91 7.3 that i've notice while running the rad hose firms up rather quickly even when cold but doesn't seem to over-pressurize, i see no bubles in the rad. with the cap off; but coolant does ever so slowly come up in the neck and into the over flow tank. it does not overheat at all and when the cap is on it doesn't push past it to the tank. is this a sign of cavitation or something else ?

Sounds like normal operation to me.. the upper hose gets hard as the engine heats up.. not much flow till the thermostat opens.. relax

If your getting any compression in the radiator you'll know it. It can empty the radiator in about 10 seconds.

the hose firms-up then feels almost hard long before it heats up is why i was thinking i have a problem. i pulled the rad and sent out for cleaning-lots of corrosion. i'll tell more when i get it back.

What exactly is the procedure for a THOROUGH radiator flush in these engines? I have had many problems with shops in the past that drain the radiator, put in new coolant and screw up the temp gauge....
