I have a 99 EB and I have a problem with my rear brake lights...they don't work. My tail lights work when I turn on the parking lights but for some reason when I hit the brake they don't get brighter. My high mounted brake light works fine so that kind of rules out fuses. Since its my family's daily driver, I need to quickly tear into it and fix the problem. If anyone knows of any reasons for this malfunction, please let me know. I'm in the military stationed overseas, so I can't just take it in to my local dealer, not that I would want to anyway. The only thing I have done so far is check the fuse (just to be sure) and change bulbs.
Thanks.
Mine went out 2 days ago... Exact same signs/symptoms. Bad stoplight switch. changed out in 15 min. works like a charm. Autozone has them for $6.99 or Advance 12.99 (the advance I got was a reboxed ford oem part and they matched AZ price. I believe this will fix your problem
Medic7909, this is what I was thinking it might b...but since the high mounted brake light worked, I ruled it out.
Well, I'll go online and order this part and hopefully this will remedy it. Or should I say, I'll order it online then wait 3 weeks to receive the part in the mail...sometimes it sucks being stationed overseas.
Hkiefus, yes I can get it out of park...which is another reason I ruled out this switch. Well since this part only cost around $10, it won't hurt if this is not the prob.
The same feed that runs directly the mid mount brake lamp, is split and runs to the muli-function switch(Turn signal/wiper/highbeam/hazard switch) If you have turns and hazards, this is the culprit. Take the cover off of the column and look for heat signs around the connectors.
Well now that I'm looking at a schematic a little harder, I can definitely see that this multi function switch is probably the culprit. I also see that the shift lock actuator runs off the high mounted brake light wire...so there's the reason the high brake light works and I can shift out of park.
Medic7909, you don't happen to have the part number or anything from when you bought yours do you?
Thanks for your input, whotnow.
The problem is the multi-fuction switch, not the stoplamp switch. If the stoplamp switch were the problem, the high-mount light would also be inoperative and the shift interlock would be stuck.
