Two years ago I found this forum and I want to share just one of the positive impacts it has on my truck and my wallet...I keep excel spreadsheets on all of my vehicles, so I know what is going on with them (I track everything and have it broken down to every conceivable cost and performance). So anyway, I extracted my mpg for my early 1999 F350 for the past two years and looked at it. I was simply amazed at the overall increase of fuel mileage when I laid a trend line ovr the data graph. There are 82 fill-ups in this data and there are some outliers - but the trend is clear - fuel mileage is headed in the right direction and I have many people on FTE to thank. Here is the graph:
So, the moral of the story is this...keep good records, do mods, take advice from the more sage members of this forum, and join FTE as a supporter...it pays for itself and I have the data to prove it.
calculated vs last 5??? i dont understand it...but great job on your economy
Calculated is the fuel mileage I had for the prvious tank of fuel.
Last 5 is the running average of the last five averages (drops the six oldest fillup and adds the newest fillup to the data).
Trendline is the best fit linear trend of the Calculated mpg data.

This can be looked at in two different ways and unfortunatly you can't factor in the human error here. So either this chart shows your mods are leading you to fuel economy or you are getting better at laying off the throttle. My fuel economy curve seems to be going the oposite direction because every mod I do seems to effect my right foot. I was thinking of having surgury to lighten up my foot a bit. Great job on tracking your fuel usage. I hope that you are right. Thanks for posting.

True enough, but with the mods I have done one would be led to believe that my foot would be in it more, thus my fuel mileage would be decreasing. Second, I think the data set is now large enough 330+ fillups in eight years and 86 since I joined this group, that the human factor can be taken out of the equation. If the claim was made over a few fillups, I believe you would be right on the money...you can't make conclusions that I have. But with a large data set over the history of the truck, I think the data is conclusive...prior to my joining FTE my mpg was typically below 14...now it is typcially above 14.

I agree with you. I was just fooling around. I wish I had that kind of luck with that kind of fuel milage. I am conducting my own test this spring. Every year I make a trip to Fairbanks. My first year when the truck was new I got 22-24 mpg on my trip. Last year before mods just increased tire size to 305 70r16 I got about 20mpg. This year I have all my mods and going back to stock tires I am going to run 80econo and see what happens. I can't wait to get back and post results. I don't get off the island much. Right now on the island I am getting 14mpg.
Shoot Pete...I don't know why you can't see it...but I can send it to you if you want.
Sure... I'd like to see how you've managed your data. I'm just getting started with a similar effort, but still have all the data only in written form in my logbook in the truck. I like using good ideas!
All my settings are tunred "on"... might be something in ym Internet settings that are controlled by my company's IT department.
The graph looks good.. nice trend. One of the guys sent me the jpg file, which I could see. The link, though, is definitely blocked by my company's computer system.
