smoke questions

i was outside today when it was nice(over 40 degrees) and i was running the throtle from the engine compartment, i noticed some water comming out of the exhaust pipe. this is the most ive ever seen, other than some normal drips, but not excessive. so im went to the shop(having other work done) and ask them about it. they said that it could mean ?blown head gasket? but said it wasnt likely, it was probably just all the recent changes of weather and it was condensation that probably just melted and i pushed it out when i was playing with the throttle.

so im guessing that the thing to do is watch the exhaust to see if it gets white and smells sweet. Is that right the right thing to do, or am i just being OCD about my truck. i tend to get freaked out when anybody mentions anything that could be potentialy be costly or cost me the truck.

are there any other things i could look for.(theres no missing or rough driving and no codes registering. and the engine oil is clean, not frothy or containing any water droplets) and what does "sweet" exhaust really smell like anyway? plus when its cold how do you tell the difference between white smoke and being able to see the whitish exhaust?

96 5.8 thanks for the help

RELAX!!!!!

Now-if you have a blown HG you'll know by- drive the truck for a good length of time,20-30 miles, then get out and look at your exaust. Even if it's cold outside once the truck is good and warm the exaust will clear up if everythings ok.

The sweet smell- Have you never tasted or smelt anti-freeze? Dip you finger in the rad.(WHEN IT'S COLD) Shake your finger off and touch the tip of your tongue. You'll never forget the smell and taste after. DON'T DRINK IT!!!!!!

Sorry about the warning labels but you know how it is.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I have a 96 with a 5.8 as well. Whenever there is alot of moisture in the air, or if the weather dips in temp all of a sudden, I get extra moisture from my exhaust. I freaked the first time as well.

Drill a small hole in the low spot in the muffler to slow down the rotting of the exhaust system.
