Another oil thread 4 Beach

After a couple of months of researching oils I have finally decided on one. I was looking at Rotella T, Delvac 1, and Duron Syn. I am currently running Motorcraft synthetic 0w-30 as it gets rather cold up here in the winter. I didn't want to get into running dino in the summer and synthetic in the winter as I don't like switching back and forth so I wanted to stay with a synthetic. I liked the Rotella T 5w-40, but I think I would have to switch back to the 0w-30 in the winter. Finally I found one that would work well down to -35C without any problems. It is also the most convient for me to buy around here of the three. (not cheap though, costs the same as the Delvac 1) Here is how it compares to the Rotella in the cold:
Duron 5w-40 pour point -48c // Rotella -40
Duron pumping viscosity @ -35c 23,200 // Rotella 39,000
Duron pumping viscosity @ -40c 47,854// Rotella n/a
Duron ccv @ -30 6,100 // Rotella 6,400

Beach here is a link to the tech sheet on it. Let me know what you think, or if you have any insights to offer. I'm going to give it a try and see how it does with some Blackstone reports. I picked up a case today, but not due for a change untill the end of the month.

Beach is tired and worn out....

Taking a break for awhile.

Good luck with your choice, but the 30 weight is to light for towing or heavy use. The 0W may give you better cold start-ups, butafter warned up... your motor really wants the protection of the 40 weight (or equivalent).

I would go with a name brand 5W-40 as the difference between 0W and 5W is not that much and after you have started and warmed up... you really need the 40 weight viscosity protection.

Good luck,

I am running Esso XD3 0W40. You can find it at Wallmart for a pretty good price.
Where are you finding the petro-can, I would consider running it but dont know any vendors other than calling a bulk dealer which I may do.

Yes I don't tow with 0w-30. It's what Ford sells up here for winter use in the PSD. I was trying to find an oil that I could use for summer towing and hopefully get by with in the winter. We hit below -40 up sometimes. Thankfully not to often. Ususally it's between -15F and 10F for most of the winter. That's why my choice was 5w-40. For the really cold times I usually park it in the garage. I was thinking about buying an oil pan heater for when I end up somewhere during a -40 cold snap. I could just plug it in with the block heater and the oil would be nice and warm.

I picked it up at the gas station down the street, that's why it was so easy to get. I was surprised that they had it. They said they sell alot of it to all the diesel owners around here and try to keep alot on hand. The shell stations around here don't stock the Rotella T syn, and the only place I could find the Delvac was from a bulk station in the industrial area. I checked Walmart, Canadian Tire, etc., but none of them stocked anything except Rotella T dino 15w-40. If I do find I need to switch to a light winter oil I will look at the XD3. I never knew untill now that it was CI-4 approved, I would rather run that than the 0w-30 I run now. Thanks..

Tim
I really like the Delvac as well, but it looks to be hard to get my hands on. I can get it from the Esso (Exon) bulk station, but would have to order it.

Like most things I guess I have a habit of analyzing the heck out of it. Oh well gives me something to do on the computer when I have nothing constructive to do.

I HATE oil threads, but have you looked at Valvoline Premium Blue 5-40 full synthetic. I know a lot of people swear by this oil. I run it with great results. It apears to be the oil of choice for "heavy" modded engines.

Yes I looked at Valvoline on the web. If I recall (I haven't rechecked if I'm wrong) it was one of the only ones that met the new CJ-4 standard. Problem is the availablity of most brands is limited here. Either that or they may carry the brand, but in the wrong types and I didn't want to get into special orders.

Jeff, sorry to hear your getting burned out with all the oil related work you've done, everyone needs a break once in a while no matter what it is. I have learned alot by following a bunch of your threads over the last few months. Thanks..

Actually I know it is dificult here to find also. Luckily my buddy is the local Valvoline rep for Pittsburgh. My Blackstone reports have been very good with this oil

Actually Petro-Can was suppose to be the first one out with CJ-4 but the kicker is it is only 10W40 in the full syn.

http://www.petro-canada.ca/en/produc...vices/447.aspx

Esso has a 15W40 that is CJ4.

http://www.imperialoil.com/Canada-En...extra_CJ-4.pdf

I have yet to see either of these by my own eyes yet and I want at leaset a 5W for next winter. You really have to watch oil here in Canada, the latest spec has never been available at Canadian tire or wallmart, Rotella with CI-4+ came avail when the new CJ4 was suppose to come out, before that I dont think it was even CI-4. I have seen the 20L pail at wallmart but again not the latest spec, what gives?

Super08 I would not hesitate to run the duron. If not towing, run the 0W40 otherwise run the 5W40. While Petro Canada is a relative young company (32 years) which would normally scare me, they did assimulate Gulf, BP and parts of Arco, with respects to refining and marketing, they are also in a non compete market. Which means alot of the tech and licenses probably carried over, so they didn't start from scratch trying to figure out how to make engine oil. The best oil you can use is one that is available enough to change it on time, and also one that suits your climate needs. To me it looks like the duron meets both of those. It is also CI-4+ rated, which is all that is required for the 6.0. Another thing to remember about GP IV Synthetics is that only a few companies make the PAO basestock in North America, the ones that I know of are Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Innovine. (Formerly BP Chemical)

On edit, you might pay a call to your local 6.0 tech and ask his opinon on what weight/brand that he sees the least ammount of issues with.
