Grinding noise when starting

Ok guys, i have a 84 Bronco with a 351W. It was trying to kick over but after the first uh uh (you know the sound) it would make this awful like grinding sound and it would just stop starting. So first i relpaced the solinoid and the wire to the starter and the ground off the battery. That stoped it for a little while, it is back so I replaced the solinoid again and I put a new starter in. The old starters teeth were pretty chewed but only at the very tips. The flywheel looked good too. So it started good for the first 10 or so times. But it just strated doing it again. I am thinking it is a short somewhere that isn't giving the starter enough juice. Please help. Sorry it is so long.

Thanks
John

Your starter and fly wheel are probably out of alignment or your fly wheel is bad or warped.

if they are out of alignment, how do you go about fixing that. Also if the flywheel is warped, do i have to drop the tranny to fix that.

Have you replaced the primary cable from your battery to the solenoid? They fill up with corrosion and give the same symptoms you report.

The battery connection would be my first check since pulling the flywheel means at least seperating the engine and tranny enough to be able to get between them with tools to remove said flywheel. You may be able to see the condition of the flywheel as far a warpage by removing the lower cover and keeping an eye on the flywheel while someone cranks the engine. Obviously there is a great deal of care and precaution to be taken in this process. Use common sense and be safe about it. If there is enough warpage you should be able to observe it as the flywheel spins. Correct me if I'm way off here guys.

thans guys, hopefully georgedavila is right and i will check the primary cable. If not I will take the cover off and watch the flywheel as someone else turns the motor. Hopefully it won't come to this, thanks again. Any other suggestions would be great.

Thanks
John
