Three of the 1972 Ranchero optional engines were:
429-cid 360HP Thunder Jet
429-cid 370HP Cobra Jet
429-cid 370HP Cobra Jet Ram Air
And a 4 speed with a Hurst Shifter! This was the last year of "The Good Old Days."
You will need heavier front springs if you install a 429/460.

BTW... the RAM AIR air cleaner assembly with or without vacuum doors, is now a reproduction item. This was a very rare and hard to find item even in 1972. No other RAM AIR unit is correct, or will work due to the seal between the air cleaner assembly and hood scoop. The whole RAM AIR assembly was a one model year only item.
Actually the 429 RAM AIR was a 429 SUPER COBRA JET. There was a difference at the intake to head ports and exhaust ports, high flow heads with larger intake and exhaust valves, and a beefier cam, something all SUPER COBRA JETS share. That engine was not available with A/C. It was typically mated to a 4Speed Hurst and sold with the DragPak options which included heavy duty front and rear coil springs, heavy duty front and rear anti-sway bars, heavy duty shocks. The 370 HP figure for the RAM AIR is bogus. Yes, Ford did advertise it as 370 HP, but that was for the EPA and insurance companies, but the dyno says different, more like 425 HP.
The 370 HP 429 will put a smile on your face. A 550 HP Ford Racing 460 will warp a smile on the face that you sit on..... That I know from experience....LOL
It takes 600+ HP to pop a wheelie with a 1972, if you want a picture I will try to dig it up, but I do have one.
In contrast, the Starsky&Hutch 460's of their day barely eek-ed out 200 HP. By 1978 the Lincoln 460 was down to a measly 165 HP.
Slap a set of aluminum Cobrajet heads, aluminum SCJ intake, SCJ cam, and headers on to one of those old 1978 barge engines and it will wake one up to the tune of 480 HP or more with no other changes.
