Transmission issue

I have always had an issue with my E4OD transmission doing a weird shift between 2nd and 3rd gear. It seems like it shifts and then hesitates to completely "grab", maybe the torque converter not locking up? I'm not sure but recently I installed a DP-tuner chip and with the added power from the engine, the transmission problem is magnified. If i am getting into the gas pedal (maybe 3/4 of the way down or more) the truck will kind of desitate shifting into every gear. Sometimes it will shift into third gear, and then shift right back into second gear and try shifting again. It's like it isnt able to lock itself into the next gear when trying to shift. Has anyone experienced a problem like this with the E4OD?

could be a number of things. Is your OD light flashing or any codes? Has your tranny been rebuilt before? If no it might just be on it's last leg.

Last winter when I bought the truck and changed the transmission fluid I noticed that the torque converter was blue and the transmission had some writing on it in yellow which makes me think that its probably not original. The light on the end of the shifter has never flashed either. I think I'm going to try a Baumann Engineering shift improver and see how that works. Does anyone have any opinions on this? Does anyone have any opinions on what kind of transmission fluid to use? The stuff I put in it last time was Amsoil synthetic atf, as well as one bottle of lubeguard. I've heard some say that is good stuff to use and others say not to put that in an E4OD. Anyone have any input on this?

do you have a tranny shop that you trust to give you an honest opinion around you? If so I'd take it in and have them take a look at it. You might have a solenoid pack hanging up or any number of issues from a poor previous rebuild to just something simple.

There are a few shops around I could take it to, but I havent really dealt with any of them to know if they are honest or not. I might just take a chance and bring it to one to see what they say. Thanks for your suggestion.

Just had mine rebuilt after someone had done a half-*** job on it. Cost $2996.00 to have it done right. I did have an aftermarket torque converter added that cost an extra $600.00 over a Ford factory one. Thre transmission shop put amsoil synthetic trans fluid with no additives. According to amsoil no additives are needed. Heat is the number one enemy on a transmission. Synthetic will help reduce that. Also, an external transmission cooler is important if your truck doesn't already have one. Unfortunately, the E4OD will only be good for about 150,000 miles at best between rebuilds so I've been told by a Ford service manager. Synthetic may improve on that. Working it hard will obviously shorten that. I was told that I will be doing good to get 100,000 miles on mine. (The truck weighs 14,000lbs) 1997 F450.

I'm interested to know what you find out. I have the exact same problem I believe. Aswell Sometimes mine will shift realy hard into 3rd and into overdrive when I'm at about 3/4 throtle. like you said it just seems to get worse when I am using my programer aswell. Does anyone know of a good website dedicated to E4OD's or auto trannys in general?

I know if you put a programmer on top of internal modifications in a tranny ( ie tuner on top of a shift kit ) you're gonna screw up your tranny. Been there done that got the rebuild bill to prove it. Tuners/Programmers up line pressure so do shift kits so you are compounding the pressure which blows seals, causes irratic shifts, and destroys the tranny. If you modify the internals you need to get a custom chip without tranny tweaks.
