Well, damn. Then I guess I'll have to just go all the way to either the ICM on the right fenderwell, or the coil at the rear of the engine.
Or study the diagrams more. The digital dash got a tach lead that apparently is not present in the analog dash version of the harness. That lead is a tap on the line between the coil negative and the ICM. It connects to the dash via C212, which is supposed to be in the engine compartment below the PCM connector -- or under the PCM, inside -- the text seems contradictory in the EVTM and the illustration is unclear on this. At any rate, I haven't found it, if it exists.
I would tap the coil output. Thats what we did on my mom's 3.0L. Its an easy location to get to and it is closer to the dash. You just take the cupholder out, maybe loosen the ABS module and then take the cover off. You will probaby want to drill through the firewall. They include rubber grommets with the tachometer kits.
The SPOUT (spark output) connector has 46Hz at cold start (46 / 3 * 60 = 920 RPM), and 35 Hz when warmed up a bit ( 35 / 3 * 60 = 700 RPM). Might work.
