Best way to carry a MTN Bike

I'm hunting one down for my Trek Fuel 98. I have been eyeballing some Yakima items that looks like they could do the trick... If worse comes to worse... I'll use a rec'ver hitch bike carrier. But something about dangling a $4K bike off the back of the truck worries me. So I think I'll continue to look to stay in the bed..

Use something like this - mounted to a 2x6 or something. You can even screw it to the front wall of the bed.

Another place is Performance Bike

I've also just used tie-downs from the handlebars to the anchors in the bed. If the bike has suspension - even better - it will compress the suspension a little.

I suppose if you looked around and found a couple of pieces of small angle, turned on end with some mating holes for the fork...then mount that to something like the forward bedrail. It could work... With those 6.5' beds you'd be forced to remove the wheel (front) Otherwise it could work...
...Now only if Ford threw something like that in on their accessory/option line-up for the 150s...
On Edit: Yakima

I agree with rpxr400, if you mount one of the fork mounts on a 2x6, 4x4 or even a 4x6 board cut to fit the width of the bed, it would not allow the bike to go anywhere, and you would not need to drill several holes in your bed. For security, screw in a couple eye screws into the 4x6 and run a chain through those and around the bike frame. Few people are willing to try to run off with a bike attached to a 5ft. long 35lbs. 4x6.

i have two of those front Fork mounts mounted to my flush truck box.
I pop the front wheels off, mount the front fork to the bike holder(s) and im off!!!!!
Works great! Looks ultra custom too, when the fork mounts arn't carrying bikes they can be used for tie downs. I haVE A black flush mount truck box and the bike fork mounts are black as well. I just drilled two holes for each bike mount into the truck box (no holes in the truck). The match is perfect!!
Ill post a pic soon

get a bike rack that goes in the hitch and if thats not an option then take a 2x4 and put thats in the notch in the bed then bolt a quick release to the 2x4 and attach the front tire to that....thats what i do with my 01 i have now and thats what i plan on doing to my new truck..
it's easy and cheap
