Can I pull codes without a code reader
Hey guy's, I was wondering if there was a procedure to pull codes without a code reader? On my buddies car, he pulled his own codes with a voltmeter in his ECU plug in, by counting needle pulses. This can also be done with a test light.
I have a 92 Ranger 4x4 XLT 4.0L. It's not OBDII. I want to know how to pull the codes the old fashion way if you guys know how.
Any info would be great.

That is from the tech thread...it outlines doing with a voltmeter...it's rather lengthy and takes a while to load, and I have FiOS internet... look down to where it starts running the code procedures and it talks about the voltmeter trick. All you end up doing is jumpering wires to flash the CEL.
Call around if you can, some places will still pull EEC-IV codes.

Thanx this is great. I pretty much knew most of this but was unclear on a few things. I've done these tests on Cheby's and and a few Chryblers.... but oddly enough, never on a ford. It's a little more complicated on fords but that's OK. I wasn't sure on how to connect seeing that ford has two connectors... now I know.
There are still some places around here that read OBDI but this is for my own knowledge, I fix a lot of cars out of my garage and I see a lot more fords now than before... It's going to be a good tool for me. Plus recently enough I developed a check engine on my 92, I hate anyone but myself touching my truck. So this is going to come in handy.

I'm looking at an AutoXray "EZ-SCAN AX6000 OBD-1 & OBD-2 Scan tool. Seems very versatile it comes with computer software, and it can be updated through the internet. It comes with vehicle specific wires for OBD-1 and also reads newer CAN protocol. It's $700 though so that's why I'm in no rush, I should order it by the summer. My truck on the other hand needs the attention soon.
