A colleague of mine e-mailed this link to me. I work in the field of DUI/Substance Abuse assessment. In other words, when someone is arrested for a DUI in Illinois, they could come to me and I would decide how many hours of treatment they need. (Not an exact science by any means.)
Anyway. I would never drink and drive, but obviously some people do. For instance, many of my clients have tried to limit their drinking past a certain time - thinking they would be legal to drive, and they didn't wait long enough, were arrested, yada yada yada.
this i dont think is very effective. Im told that people have already swiped these things and put them on ebay like some kind of fad thing its a conversation piece.
being a kind of hard liner myself im not sure that counselling even helps the habitual offenders..and i know that tougher sentences with more jail time wont make much difference to a hard core alchoholic and even if you take their license away they still will not only drive but drive drunk. its even difficult to hold the seller of the alcohol ( bartender or bar) liable too. personally i think that the whole legal system should be revamped i mean its kinda tough to swallow when someone gets six years for manslaughter and 20 for what appears to common sense to be a lesser offense
no, for one, everyone knows that it is illegal to drive while drunk, a talking bathroom isn't going to do anything.
i say this, and have been advocating for awhile, if the gov and people were truly serious about driving while intoxicated, then they would make it a felony offense.
sure, won't stop everyone, and some people will get the screw over in life because they still thought it was a misdemeanor offense, but hey, to bad.
but since everyone in this country still prety much thinks its alright to drive while drunk and have the attitude of "it won't happen to me" when it comes to getting killed or injured by a drunk, than things won't change and no one will ever take driving drunk seriously.
but i guess they will only take it seriously if they themselves, or a loved one gets killed or have their lfie ruined because of some idiot driving drunk.
bf250 makes a very good point. DUI is D-U-M-B! I remember reading about the penalties in several other countries. Ours was the most lenient and the worst was- get caught driving drunk and get a bullet in the head...on the spot!(I think it was El Salvador or one of those Central American countries) I say we need to make the penalties MUCH more painful than the current ones (although I draw the line at execution.)
When I was in Heidelberg Germany the DUI punishment for a senior NCO was $1,000 & no driving for 1 year. It didn't happen often & everyone watched out for friends that had a bit too much (or were even questionable).
I think that the Talking Urinal Cake is about 95% marketing gimmick, and about 5% serious prevention effort. I'm shocked that "the State" paid for those. Whoever authorized that must be a sucker for a slick salesmen. If you came to me with that idea you'd be laughed out of the office.
I quit drinking to stop driving under the influence. I made myself a promise that if I ever drove drunk again I'd quit drinking. I drove dui & I quit the next day.Luckly I didn't get caught or hurt anyone.
This will not help at all. Maybe people need the situation to be explained- A car, any car, is more dangerous than any firearm made to date. And the thing that upsets me the most is that it's never the drunk who gets hurt or killed in the accident, always the innocent. To anyone who's ever been faced with this first hand it's not even a choice, you just won't consider it at all. I almost lost my mother and middle brother to a drunk driver 11 years ago, we got lucky. It's never even been a choice for me or my brothers. The drunk can only be glad that the police got to the scene before my father, other brother, and I did. If it were the other way around there'd probably be one less drunk in the world today. I like ADMIN.'s solution but I'm not against the death penalty for repeat offenders, they don't care about their own and others lives on the road why should the rest of us care about them? Zero tolerance is the only tolerance!!!
I totally agree with all of you. A DUI should be a felony.
First offense: seize the car, serve 1 year in prison with no parole, no time off for good behavior, no driving privileges for one year after release. Then, a restricted license for five years.
Second offense: seize the car, $50,000 fine, five years in prison and the license is revoked forever.
Third offense...seize the car, $500,000 fine, life in prison with no possibility of parole. And no sentencing discretion. If you're found guilty, boom - there it is.
Regarding the urinal cakes, I too think that they are a gimmick. Anyone who is that blasted is not likely to listen to a friend, much less a talking toilet! And what about women who drive drunk? Two weeks ago here in Portland, a woman driving on the wrong side of the road killed two other women in a head-on collision. Of course, the drunk was only slightly injured. And guess what - this wasn't her first offense.
I generally lean left of center politically, but not on this issue.
