i bought my 04 6.0L used with 66thou kms. it came with a load of aftermarket stuff. at 142thou kms i needed headgaskets. one dealership managed to get me warrentty. i got the truck back after they replaced headgaskets, EGR cooler, and a injector. when i picked it up the service manager said the exaust is makin a terrible noise, they tried to fix it, but anymore time spent on it would be my cost. i guess it has a 4" down pipe. i have no clue who made it, im guessing MRBP??. ive NEVER had any noise from the exaust in the time i owned it. the truck sounds TERRIBLE. anyone else have this trouble? where is it rubbin? what to fix it? it rubs just by a bit, when i hammer on dry pavemnt the truck sounds normal, but when drivin around normaly it sounds like the turbo is commin thru the cab. there is alittle more vibratin on the cab it feels like. i work in a automotive shop and have access to a lift.
Prob the exact same place mine is hitting.. Check the spot where the downpipe bends up to connect to the rest of the exhaust. Mine was right on the firewall seam there.. Only way around it for a 4" is to beat in the firewall.. I have a 3.5" Downpipe but I learned a lesson today..
The 6.0 is one torque sob.. For my case I hit it one too many times with power that it shoved my downpipe further into my cat pipe.. In your case that 4" is damn near there so it wouldnt take much for it to torque and put itself against the firewall..
Mine was rubbing on one of the bolts for the cross member that supports either the transmission or the transfer case (one of those, its been a while since I've been down there). Loosen the band clamp that connects the down pipe to the turbo then rotate the entire exhaust assembly away from any area that could be rubbing. I had to rotate mine away from the frame rail. If your pipe is not welded it'll help to loosen the pipe connection after the transmission before you rotate it.
well, tried tonite to get it to come free. thought we had it but couldnt get the down pipe to bolt back up to the turbo, when we got it to bolt back up it was the same mess. 3 hrs and nuthin completed. im wondering if when they pulled the cab to do the headgaskets they moved it 1/2inch ahead, that would be all thats needed to cause major problems with a down pipe thats already to big. my next solution is to take it to a exaust shop, cut the pipe, pull down pipe out, hammer the pipe where it rubbs on Uppie tube from RH manifold, beat the firewall in a bit, n then put it all together. sad that i drove 80thuo kms before with no troubles, get the headgaskets done and nuthin but GREIF.
Not sure if this will help.. Mark at MKO where I got my exhaust talked to some folks.. He said the 6.0 is a torque'n sob that will jar the Downpipe.. This is what he told me to do..
Loosen the turbo clamp, loosen the dp clamp and (for me) loosen the cat delete flange.. Then using a pry bar, pry the downpipe down until its got 1/2" of clearance from firewall.. then holding it have someone clamp the turbo clamp down until it damn near breaks.. then clamp everything else.. He said if you dont clamp the turbo clamp tight enough everytime you torque the engine, it'll jam the downpipe into the tube.. Which I think is what mine did b/c it was fine all day until that evening.. thats when we noticed it was on the firewall..
If you have the 4" downpipe then it's probably running against a seam where the cab is put together at the firewall. There's a couple of ways to fix this. Remove your downpipe and bend the seam down by some appropriate method (hammer, portapower) and reinstall or beat clearance into the downpipe where it's rubbing. It's a bitch to do for sure and if you're system's welded then take it to a muffler shop or be prepared for some work. I usually have to readjust mine every so often. A couple of 2x4's and 4x4 blocks and a long prybar really helps.
thanks for the info, last nite we tighten up the turbo clamp, then went under and pulled the exaust system down as fas as we could and did up the band clamp. but in the end it was rubbin the same. so today im goin to try and lossen off the turbo clamp, take for a little ride n tighten it back up. if this dont work, off to the muffler shop. lol i can turn wrenchs but weldin is a different story......
I'd bet when he replaced your head gaskets he moved your cab forward. Sometimes they lift the cab and dont get it set down exactly where it was. Wasnt much room to begin with, wouldnt take much to become trouble.
if its rubbing on the firewall what i did was loosen the clamp at the turbo and used a ratchet strap to pull it away from the firewall then tightend the clamp...also after driving it for awhile the clamp does loosen up i snug it up about every oil change..
