Have a quick question. This is my first older ford that im actually doing work on.
I have a 1979 f-150
351m c-6. Just bought a new holley 600cfm carb for it. well I was reading the instructions and it says somthing about transmission kick down hardware if w/ aod overdrive transmission is installed.
My question is do i have overdrive? i would just go out to the truck and look for my self but its actually in a shop getting it tranny rebuilt..go figure. It says it will cause harm if not installed. Let me know I would appreciate.
No, you will not burn up third gear if you run without a kickdown. You just will not have any passing gear or quick downshift if you kick the throttle down. Downshifting would have to be done with the column shifter. A C6 has several control mechanisms besides the shifter. RPM's, engine vacuum, and the kickdown linkage or rod. There is no overdrive in the C6.
An AOD transmission run without the TV cable will quickly burn up. The functions of the vacuum modulator and kickdown were incorporated in the same mechanism. Thankfully we don't have to deal with the AOD in our old iron trucks unless we choose to install one.
