Is there a legal requirement that the corner side marker lights need to have amber bulbs? Any reason that I could not install a clear (white) bulb behind the clear lens cover?
Yes, the side markers need to be amber in front and red in rear. You could put a clear bulb in there, but you run the risk of additional points/fines if you get stopped. You could also get some of those coated bulbs that look chrome, but light amber. I have those in my front turn signals and they look good - just haven't taken the time to find them yet for the front markers.
Yep as MazdaRangerGuyInSTL said, each state has it's own laws, and the only way to know for sure is to check your state laws.
In Texas, headlights must be clear or that fake blue stuff that's tinted blue a bit, front turn signals must be amber, rear brake lights must be red, rear running lights red, rear turn signals amber or red, rear backup lights white.
On the 99 Ranger, the side markers have a clear lense and are just outside the headlamp. Below them is the huge orange turn signal which also are on as parking / running lights. The turn signal actually wraps around the corner a bit. I was thinking to replace the side marker bulbs with clear / white since there is already amber turn and an amber side light from the turn signal. Maybe I'll check the DMV rules too.
