93 chevy 2500 x cab, started shaking like crazy going down the road today. I plow with it, but was just driving, didn't hit anything. The rear driveshaft moves about 1/2 inch up and down right around the center support, the rubber inside the center support moves. Is this simply a center support bearing gone to crap, or could it be a bent driveshaft? I didn't hit anything when it happened, but I have been hitting things like crazy with the pa snow over the past days. I am hoping it is just a center support, but if it isn't, I will need to get it to a shop.
ok, got a curveball here. two places didn't have, and couldn't get the center support. One place could, and I got it. Trouble is, it is much smaller, and I already got it apart (completely ripping the old one to shreds). Now I have a plastic bag around the transmission where the driveshaft goes in. What will happen if I start the truck? I can drive it in 4 wheel drive if I can start it-but I am afraid of it blowing transmission fluid everywhere. I would really like to be able to move it a little ways though.
with the beautiful warm dry weather we have been having on the east coast, it would be very easy for the carrier bearing to ice up while sitting after you stop, and as soon as it turns again it would rip itself to pieces.
i have seen it happen way to many times.
lug nuts are fine-tires are fine I checked those first. So, pep boys yesterday had three choices for driveshaft supports-the smallest one didn't look right, he didn't have the middle one, so I got the largest one available-at least this is what I was told. Anyway, the outer shell is the correct size, but the inner bearing diameter is far too small. I tried changing from a 2500 to a 3500, tried changing engines, etc on autozone.com, and they all have the same inner diameter (1.378 I think), the inner diameter on mine is closer to 1.6 or 1.7. The closest match i can find fits an f 450. Autozone and advance auto can't get these things anymore. Any advice on where to get one of these? I will try napa today and bring the shaft-I will match up as close as I can. How tight of a fit does it have to be? Is it ok if there is a tiny bit of play, maybe tack weld the bearing to the shaft?
ok-all set. THe problem was actually a frozen u joint. I didn't pick up on it till I had the driveshaft out completely, and was inspecting the joints while I was at it. The carrier bearing did need to be replaced, but it wasn't causing the vibration, it was definitely a bad u joint. Did the whole back axle while I was at it-3 new u joints and it's good to go.
