Just bought a 86 f150 today has a 122,000 on it and running good. Its is the straight six 300. I was wondering how many quarts of oil and what is the factory weight reccomendation?
The Haynes manual says six quarts for all engines. But I tried running six quarts in my 351w, and it is just too much oil. My situation is a little odd though, since I didn't have the original dipstick tube.
The first time I tried running 6 quarts, I notice going down the road I had a cloud of smoke coming out the back. I crawled under the truck and oil was pouring out from the rear of the engine. I thought it was a rear main seal problem, but I kept driving it and it quit. I have been putting 5 quarts in it ever since with no problems, and no leaks.
What you can do if you want to be conservative, is put in 5 quarts. Run the engine to warm it up and then let it sit for 15 minutes. Check the oil level. If it's near a quart low, put the other quart in.
