steering column

how do you grease the steering column because it is making a slight grinding noise when you turn it and also a slight noise no play just the other

I thought mine was like that until I had my wife turn the wheel while I was outside the car and heard how loud it was from the outside. It sounds like a loud but low tone "WHOOOOOOOOO!!! (pronounced "who?" as in who knows what this sound is). I have an 89 f-150 xlt
