Filled up the tank for the first time today and I averaged 10.4 MPG in mixed driving. My normal commute is 10 miles oneway on surface streets in traffic and it takes me about 30 - 45 minutes.
If anybody thinks it's important, I'll periodically post an Excel chart showing my mileage if the moderator will PM me and tell me how. I know we are all interested in the mileage of these trucks and while this chart will be specific for my experience, it may be useful to others.
Correct UGA33, it's a 350 and it's the got the 4.10. My fiver is only 12k lbs GVW and the hit to mileage for the extra ~1,500 lb towing capacity wasn't worth it to me to get the Tow Boss package and the 4.30 rear-end.
I have f450 wiyh 488 gears . While towing our 42/0 gooseneck trailer to race this weekend we were getting between 4.6 and 7.0 per the truck computer. Truck only has 600 miles on it . Hope things gets better with more miles.
I too am curious about fuel economy. Doesn't look like we're going to see the "Huge Improvement" on fuel economy that was being talked about for so long...
mattebury -- That is one sweet looking SD! Congrats! YES...please keep us posted on mpg. I am willing to bet...those numbers will improve once she is broken-in.
Here is a quote...about what helps put a dent in the mpg ratings...
The large catalyst and particulate trap permit the truck to earn the clean bill of health from the EPA, but they do cost a bit of power because of the increased back pressure. Further, the system for cleaning the particulate trap involves sending extra fuel through the engine to help burn off the gunk in the trap, and that periodic fuel use puts a small dent in the truck’s fuel efficiency.
Where in San Diego did you get yours I ordered mine at Ken Grody Ford in Carlsbad but I really want to test drive one but cant find one in north county I ordered the F350 drw 4x4 XL w 4.33 and power euip package
Just refuelled my 2008 F-350 SD 4X4 6.4 PSD for the first time. It has auto 5 speed transmission and 3.73 rear end. I drove 598Kms/372 miles and used 104.4 litres = 27.6 US Gallons = 23.0 Imperial Canadian gallons. The fuel mileage figures are: 17.46 litres /100 Kms = 13.47 miles per US gallon = 16.17 miles per Imperial Gallon. The driving was mixed urban and freeway driving. Kept speeds on freeway to 100 Kms/hour or 62 MPH. I live on a mountain with a fairly steep 1300 foot climb in 3.5 Kms or 2.1 miles so it doesn't help the fuel mileage figures.
I found the fuel mileage message in the message centre was not as accurate as the math calculation from the fuel fill up. Interestingly, the message centre read 24 L/100 kms at the beginning and steadily reduced to 19L/100 Kms just prior to fill up. The fuel mileage is improving as the engine break in advances. My 1999 F-350 XLT 7.3 PSD with similiar options was averaging 13.28 miles per US Gallon or 15.95 miles per Imperial Canadian gallon from November to January.
With temperatures ranging from 2C /36F to 11C/52F and using winterized diesel fuel, I am pleased with the fuel mileage of the 2008 6.4 PSD so far. It has to get better with increasing engine hours and warmer temperatures in the spring.
I will be towing a 5th wheel to CA in couple of weeks so will see what fuel mileage I get. The trailer is 10,600 pounds so will be a good work out.
Lastly, I think my math is reasonably correct. With litres, US gallons and Imperial gallons, you can hang your math hat wherever you are confortable.
1) Yes, it fits in the garage, with about two inches to spare, but with the duals and the way I have my junk in the garage, I can't fit both the SD and the Mrs car. First weekend I get a chance, it's a major reorg in the garage.
2) 10.4 MPG is only the first tank, the motor is brand new with less than 500 miles. I expect the mileage to climb over the next five to 10 thousand miles. 10.4 MPG is from some pretty brutal stop and go traffic on the way to and from work. It can take 45 minutes to go 10 miles on surface streets, but usually takes 30, I'd like to see any other car /truck have great mileage at an average of 20 MPH.
3) Ordered the truck from Pearson Ford Thanksgiving weekend. I was the first to order from the dealer.
