Balljoint bad?

I just changed the left cv axle on my truck. I popped the top balljoint out to make some room. When I started to screw it back in it would turn along with the castle nut. I put a jack under the axle end and put a little pressure on it and it screwed right back on. Is that normal?

I would say its perfectly normal. Your ball joint works like a trailer hitch. Just a ball in a socket. It will spin if its not under load. Once the stud catches and starts to "press" itself into your a arm it should not turn. You are talking about the stud right, not the whole unit? Otherwise when its jacked up off the ground (and jacked up by the lower A arm to take the load off of the ball joint try pushing in on the top of your tire to see if you have any movement, and try pulling your tire upwards by grasping it at the bottom, this will tell you if your lower ball joint is bad. another thing to do is grab the side of your tire that is directly opposite of your tie rod end and try pulling that in and out. If there is no movement then everything is all good.
