ok so ive had the headers fitted to the truck the other day, two days to be exact. drive it normaly last night as you do on a warm night with a new note to your ride.
get in the monster to go to work this morning and notice that i dont have a spedometer..... flatline.
lucky i have a tacho so i can at least guess my speed.
jump under for a look tonight and find that where the cable meets the box, there is some metal showing from the join of the plastic covering to the sealing bearing.
now granted that you cant see this, does this sound like i need to now replace the speedo cable?
i have removed it for a look and put it back in, but nothing happened which is what has my suspect of a dead cable.....
The speedometer cable is two pieces. the outer housing and the inner woven cable. The cable requires lubricant, but seldom gets any. White grease will work. If the inner cable doesn't have lubricant, it can bind on the housing. This will cause the needle of the speedometer to fluctuate. Sooner or later the inner cable will snap. Auto parts stores sell a inner cable replacement kit.
The only other thing I can think might be causing the problem is if the cable becomes loose from the transmission, that'll strip the gears off the plastic gear. There are gears made from 15 to 21 teeth. If this is the problem, the gears are available from Ford. You will need to know the tooth count, and it's best to take the old one with you, as there are two different rotations.
Yep, sounds like either the headers melted something, or whoever put them in rerouted the speedo cable to clear the headers and caused the cable to break.
Another thing I would look at is the back of the speedo; it's possible that while moving the cable around under the truck it simply pulled out of the speedo. If not, remove the cable and spin one end to see if it's broken inside.
....yep shes a broken cable. while i was getting it tuned the other day, i managed to have quick look while it was on the hoist.pulled out the cable from the gearbox and could hear something rolling around in there.
need to take it to 'guageworks' (a store near my work) to get a new insert put in it.
phat79- I can't help but read your posts loud to myself with an australian accent lol sorry I know that's dumb but I am easily ammused and haven't really waken up yet...
