The only one in that truck was a 4R100....no options, no chance of it not being that...unless some idiot went and pulled a 4R100 and replaced it with a E4OD or something insane like that. Its a 4R100....you can be sure.... no one is that stupid, or would go through that pain to put a weaker and older design tranny in there!
The 4R70W is in the current F-150 4.6/5.4 Triton trucks. The way Ford names the trans is this:
4R70W is 4 speed rated at 700 FT/LB max capacity.
4R100 is a 4 speed rated at 1,000 FT/LB max capacity.
5R110 is the new TorqueShift in the 6.0L PSD. It is a 5 Speed rated at 1,100 FT/LB max capacitity.
The max capacity does not seem to hold true, as many 4R100 transmission die with far less than 1,000 FT/LB being applied by the stock trucks. A tuned truck will munch down a stock 4R100 with no problem.....spitting out only the corpse!
I am not sure when the 4R70W came into play for sure, but I think it was just in the last few years.....if you must know the year of inception I can go pull out a Axiom catalog and see in the parts breakdown.......bah! I'm too lazy to do it without being pressured.
My guess is that the 4R70W came to be in 1996 or 1997.
