I have had so much luck with this forum. After my speedometer had been fluctuating for a month or so, I finally found the culprit. It was the large 17 tooth gear at the end of the cable located in the transfer case. Took about 15 minutes and cost less than $15.
Thanks again guys and maybe this may help a few of you down the road.

Gets better everyday !!
Beware: the blue spiral gear that drives the one you bought may not be far behind it! The drive gear should only be about $8 and the driven $7.50, but you have to get a pair that will work together & give you the right speed IF YOU'VE CHANGED TIRE SIZE. The cable wears out, too, and will cause the needle to jump.
All that is why I converted my '83 to use a '92-97 PSOM. The only moving part is the NEEDLE, and I can reset it with the buttons on the face!
