Maintenance plans

Trying to determine if purchasing a maintenance plan will be cost effective. I'd be purchasing the optional premium plan which follows 5k schedule. The way it works is 5k miles or 6 months for oil/filter change. 15k interval for fuel filter and then fluid changes and such as listed in the maintenance guide. The questions I have for those with more miles is what is the cost of air filter replacement and how often does it need to be changed on average? The plan also covers 6 normal wear items being spark plugs, shock absorbers, clutch disc, engine belts and hoses, brake pads and linings and wiper blades. Not all 6 apply to my truck obviously but I'd mostly wonder how long the pads last and what their replacement cost is?

Pads are very dependant on usage VS miles driven. I've covered 50K to date on our 04 PSD and there is about 60% left on the clock before changing pads.
Air filter replacement is also dependant on the driving conditions. If you drive gravel roads most of the time then you'll need to replace quite often VS someone who travels on pavement all the time. It is a visual inspection on this one. Don't depend on the air restriction guage as it reads very inacurate readings.

I usually buy 4-5 vehicles a year for our company and I never get the pre-paid maintenance plans. You are paying the dealer for future maintenance work. Perhaps you want to do your own oil or fuel filter changes in the future or have a bad service experience at the dealership? You are stuck with 'em and have already paid for work not yet performed.

Nor do I like the "tires for life" deals. Virtually everybody I've known that had the "tires for life" would not do it again- The dealer mandates that you have all required maintenance services performed at their facility (with premium prices) and when your tires are worn out, they'll give you new ones... After you beg for them, tell stories of sliding off the road in snowstorms and of course, pay an upgrade charge for any tire other than the cheapest OEM tire.

The benefits I see to it is you pay up front and avoid service price increases, work is performed at dealership so no room for warranty issues regarding maintenance and potential cost savings if pads wear fast or it goes through air filters quick. I do go up and down a lot of steep hills so if it goes through pads quick I could make out pretty good there. Any work I do I have to lay on the pavement which isn't bad in summer but when it comes to winter it's got to be a good reason for me to wedge under there. With past vehicles I use an independant shop for oil and stuff during winter months. I got quotes for 4-year/45k at $1500, 4-year/50k for $1605, 5-year/60k at $1920 and 5-year/65k at $2005. You are stuck with using oem parts but I don't see anywhere that it says you're locked to being serviced by the selling dealership. You can see the info sheet here:
