'93 Ranger Splash. Did Ford ever put manual locking hubs on a truck with the 4X4 push buttons on the dash?
Just got the truck and am trying to establish if this was original or aftermarket alteration. The hubs are clearly the type Ford used on the Rangers.
But when I engage the hubs, there is a rubbing alsmost grinding noise. Doesn't change after pushing the dash button or "engaging the hubs".
The Haynes service manual and the truck's owner's manual explains manual hub operation with the floor shifter, and auto hubs with the push button, but never a combination of the two.
not real sure if the rangers were offered with manual locking hubs and 4X4 push button, but the fullsizes did. so i am sure the compacts followed the fullsizes
its hard to say what might be grinding, sounds like maybe some water and/or grit has gotten in the hubs! have yuo0 ever taken them apart and cleaned them? if not sounds like a good time to try it.
93-97 Rangers came with manual hubs and push button 4x4. I do not think they ever had manual shifting and manual shifting for that year ranger.
I would suspect the hubs need to be cleaned. One thing that might be wrong is that the spring/cam is not put in correctly under the hub. If you get the grinding sound driving it might also be the right side outer UJ because it is exposed to weather (not behind the TBB like the other two) and the seals fail in the perm. lubed joints. Then they rust up with no lube.
