I broke a tail light this last week and I'm looking for some really tough tail light guards. I want them so tough, that if you were to set of a nuclear device under my truck, in the crater you would find the nothing else but the tail lights and the guards still intact (okay maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but you get the idea). Any suggestions?
I think the only way you are going to get the protection you are looking for is with integrated protection with the rear bumper. There just isnt a great way to mount a cover to the body for the kind of protection your looking for. Something like this. Most members get these so their wife/gf can drive too

They are pretty expensive you could probably save some $$$ with back up sensors they are pretty accurate and you get a cool digital display for your dash that shows the distance check this out http://www.eurekaboy.com/f250/poron.htm
I agree that the best way to make any kind of "substantial" protection for the tail lense is to mount to the bumper. The add on lense protectors would just push into the lenses they are secured to and crack them if you backed into anything. Moreover, it will probably cause a dent in the body cavity around the lense. Gotta go with a solid steel bumper with a welded steel beam jutting upwards.
Nope. A railing. This is the second time I've backed into something in this same parking lot.

I backed over a kids bike parked right behind me in my driveway a couple of years ago. Got my sympathies. Are those tail light guards cheaper than a tail light?

A new tail light form Auto-zone cost me $33.00, but if you factor in the anxiety of being pulled over and ticketed for defective equipment and the cost of a new lens everytime you break it, it does seem somewhat worth it.
Besides, there is always the "coolness" factor.
Shockwave: You weren't kidding about those things being expensive. Over $1000 bucks. OUCH! I might have to break out the torches and welder and see what I can come up with.

You should buy an orange cone, find a BIG empty lot and practice backing up to the cone until you don't hit it anymore. Do it about a thoushand times so you get the depth of field/distance thing down. Big money saver there. Then sell the cone! Sorry cound'nt resist.....

There's at least one in every bunch.
Normally I don't have any problems backing up. It's just this one parking lot. Maybe it's too small, maybe it's jinxed. I don't know. Unfortunately I have to go there because it's where my daughter gets her orthodontist work done.
