pinging

I have a 96 ranger 2.3 auto when on freeway and accelerating get a pinging noise out of the engine.I run regular gas but I have an exhaust leak some where and engine light is on can exhaust leak cause this??? I was thinking about changing timing belt, intake gasket , exhaust manifold gaskets, and the gasket where exhaust pipe hooks up to manifold!!! are these hard things to do?? 195,000 miles I keep oil changed every 3000 miles just seems like it had more power before and has slowly lost some , it has new plugs and wires from dealer I will get codes read tomorrow after work and I repace the 02 sensors also thanks mike

I have a V6 but it had the same problem: pinging way more than one would expect. Finally it threw a code and they replaced a "DPFE" sensor/switch and it has never pinged since.

Don't know if that will help you or not as I don't know if the 2.3 even has that thing on it.

The leaky exhaust will set a code as it affects the mixure to the upstram O2, your ping might be related to a dirty MAF. There are proceedures posted to clean it.

O2 replacement is usually throwing $$ away, unless they test bad.

Go to your local auto parts and have the codes read. You can guess and swap parts till doomsday and not solve the problem.. jd

Just Reading codes is not good enough, you need a scanner/computer that will give you live date info/graphs. Then you can indeed see where the system is failing.

I have tested too many replaced part (based on just codes) that were in fact in working order, especially O2 sensors.

I did not just switch parts at random the o2 sensors showed a couple of months ago on a scan that fixed it for awhile now these new problems have shown up as far as the gasketsI just thought while I was at it I would replace water pump and gaskets just mainly as preventive maintence

P1443 Evaporative Emission Control System - Vacuum System - Purge Control Solenoid or Purge Control Valve fault

This could be as simple as a loose or bad fuel cap, or a small leak (common) that is very difficult to isolate, most time needs a smoke machine.

If the EGR valve is working properly, with the engine warm, operate the throttle by hand revving the engine up and down over 2000 rpm you can see the EGR diaphragm move the pintle in and out.

A bad throttle position sensor will cause bucking and jerking at cruising speeds.

The throttle position sensor can be bad and not show up with the meter test. The only way to be sure is to replace with at known good sensor. jd
