Question Disabling auto 4x4

Okay, the auto 4x4 feature that my '05 has, like most if not all other rather new explorers have is rather annoying to me personally. I don't like how it engages when I'm trying to merge onto a highway, it sounds like the front end bangs into gear...I'd prefer to isolate 4x4 and 2x4 if at all possible. Is there any way to disable auto 4x4? I have an '05 XLT RSC 21k miles, 6cyl.

You can cut the wires, and loose 4x4. I'd suggest checking your tire inflation, and if it's right, take it to be checked under warranty.

I was thinking something along the lines of a fuse removal.....I'm not cutting the wires and the sound isn't abnormal, the engaging system is just a piece of *****....and I'd rather engage 4x4 when I want 4x4 just my jeep cherokee used to.

If it's engaging on dry solid asphalt, something is wrong. Either there's a tire diameter difference, or a sensor issue. The 4x4 engages when it senses slippage. It determines slippage by a difference in RPM between the front and rear. If a tire is low in pressure, the reduced diameter could be the culprit.

I'm not having a problem with when it engages, I'm not having a problem at all with it. I just think it sucks and would rather it not auto engage when I'm slipping. By the looks of it, I'm guessing there's no easy way to disable 4 wheel drive auto engagement.

Yeah its AWD, an example would be going from stopped to almost full throttle onto a highway, rear wheels slip the front end catches...I just don't like the whole theory of it and would rather manually engage it..

I'm pretty sure Auto 4x4 is AWD.....right?

If it's AWD then it's always engaged.

The dash switches go.... Auto 4x4-4x4 High-4x4 Low....when slippage is sensed the front end engages and the 4x4 stays engaged for a couple minutes

That 4wd, not AWD. It's been that way since the Gen II Explorers. I still don't understand the comment about it engaging when merging on the highway and that being normal, unless the highway is icy.

Well yeah, look what I'm posting about is disabling it, not if there's a problem. I know what an engaging problem is, and I don't have it...I just don't want it to auto engage FOR ME. So if there is no practical way to disable auto engage then I'll just leave it be.

i looked in the owners manual and you have "control-trac system", the rear wheel drives the vehicle in auto 4x4 and when needed engages the front wheels.

you need to take it to a mechanic or ford dealer and have everything looked over, something is wrong if it bangs into engagement.

If you have 4X4 Auto, 4X4 Hi, 4X4 Lo, then you have what is known as ControlTrac, not AWD

To do what you are looking for, you will have to insert a switch in line with the BROWN wire that controls the electromagnetic clutch, which regulates power to the front diff.
In the closed position you will have RWD and in the closed position you will have factory operation. The side benifit of this arrangement is that you will have access to 2low as well.

If you need to mash the gas to get on the hiway, then pull the "fuses". It realy craps out the gas miles, on your truck, but what the heck, its your truck. No reason to drag race, just to join the parking lot. My 2 cents.
