Engine Mods, questions, estimations.....

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Nov-02 AT 11:12 PM (EST)]I have an 83 Bronco. I've owned it for about a year, but used it for work mostly. Now it has become a toy. I want to beef it up a little bit and since there are minor things that need to be done mechanically, I figure now is as good of a time as any to upgrade.

I'd like to focus on adding low to midrange power.

I have a 351 small block backed by a C6.

I'm gonna switch to a stock four barrel intake from an 87 (I think) F-250 and a holley 600. The rest is speculation right now:

So I'll be feeding the air/fuel mixture through 600 cfms of Holley into some GT-40 Ford heads, and out through some long tube 2 1/2 Hedmans and into some dual 2 1/2" tubes through some Flowmaster 80 series mufflers and exiting before the back tires.

What kind of improvement would I be getting? What type of numbers would I be looking at?

I doubt I'd do a cam swap, if I did, it would be something very mild. (If I did go for a cam swap, how would this do?

Small Ford: 351W, 290/300 degrees duration, hydraulic camshaft

Advertised duration: 290 intake/300 exhaust
Duration at .050 in. cam lift: 214 intake/224 exhaust
Gross valve lift: .472 in. intake/.496 in. exhaust
Lobe separation: 107 degrees intake/117 degrees exhaust
Peak horsepower rpm: 4,500
Peak torque rpm: 3,000
RPM range: 3,000-6,500

Those Motorsport guys live, eat, and sleep Ford. This camshaft with the 290 degree intake and 300 degree exhaust duration builds performance in the 3,000-6,500 rpm range.)

One last question, what type of horsepower and torque do I get stock?

Feeding my 9 mile a gallon habit.

If you're looking for low to midrange power, that cam's not the way to go. A 3000-6500 RPM powerband might be good for a lightweight car with a manual tranny, but not for a Bronco. I had Ford Motorsport's equivalent to Edelbrock's Performer cam in my '85 with the 351. Although it was no race car due to the 3.55 gears and 33" tires, I could definately tell a difference over the stock engine. Plus, I never had any vacuum problems often associated with bigger cams.

That cam peaks at 3000 rpm for torque and produces about 330 footpounds of torque at 2000 rpm.

On another message board I asked to have the numbers run on my mock buildup to see what I'd be looking at. Here's what Desk Top Dyno showed:

I'm gonna run the numbers on a different cam though, specifically designed for trucks. I picked the cam I did because it was relatively mild. Here's another option.

204 intake duration/216 exhaust.
456 intake lift/ 484 exhaust lift.
