Question 429 parts

My grandkids and I are going to rebuild and old 53 ford panel and are going to put a 429 in. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good block casting numbers to look for with the high nickel content? I have a set of head with the casting numbers D00E-R, I was wondering if any one knew anthing about a what crank and stroke would be good to use? What would be good valve train components? All thoughts are welcome.

there arent really any blocks that are any better than any other... theyre all pretty good... the block itself will take whatever you throw at it. the moderator for this forum is running 900 horse through a stock block- with aftermarket everything else but still a stock block. as for what valvetrane stuff- what are you planning on using it for? how much are you wanting to spend? you could go with a 4.3" stroke and a .030 overbore and have a 521, or a 4.5" stroke .030 overbore and have a 545 (which is what im building) or you could go standard 429 stroke at 3.59 or 460 at 3.85, or 4.14 for a 501. it all depends on how much money and how much power you want.

If you have the DOOE-R heads, those are true CJ, SCJ heads I really would run a stroker for that to make them work, you will still want to do some port work on the exhaust side but those are some high dollar heads, another option is those heads will bring decent money so if your just looking for a street terror and not a real racer, you can get the passenger car heads to support some good hp numbers sell those heads and be on your way for the money side of things. One thing though having true CJ heads is worth a lot on the bragging dept so that is something to consider.

One of the crankshaft countrerweights has alphanumeric markings stamped on it's edge, and these markings identify whether it's a 429 or 460 crankshaft.

429 = 4U, 4UA or 4UAB

460 = 2Y, 2YA, 2YAB or 2YABC....or 3Y or 3YA.

It doesn't help with what castig code specificly but it gets you in the ball park.
