Rearend help please.

The rearend in my 96' f-150 4x4 has been roaring for a good while, and now it's time to find another one or buy a louder radio! I'm going to the pull a part tomorrow and was wondering what vehicles would interchange as far as vans, bronco's and 2wd trucks? What years had abs and what problems would I have if I got a non-abs rearend? The tag on my rearend says 3L55 88, I'm assuming that means 3:55 8.8 , am I right? Thanks in advance for any help.

You are right on the 3.55 gears in a 8.8 inch rearend. The L tells you that its a limited slip. More than likely its just the bearings causing the noise. If it is it is not a hard repair. I can't help on the interchange. Mabey someone else will chime in on that.

a van chassis is wider so unless you want to do some welding it won't fit.

bronco's and 1/2 tons will swap right in. get the same code. or just change the bearings and know that they are new rather than swap axle and have to swap those bearings.

3.55 rear is pretty common. I agree I would first start with check ing your bearings and your fluid level. Wheel bearings are cheap and easy to replace. If you have a fluid leak - fixing a seal and topping off fuid is also cheap, and not too much for the average do-it-yourselfer. if it turns out you need an entire rear or major parts... those are also available reasonable. Heck i have 3 rears that would go for 100 or less, but lol i am in Iowa and you probably wouldspend more in fuel. Cheap out your local state chapter's buy/sell or post a request - i bet someone iwll have what you need reasonable. 80-96 will fit, but may not have all the ABS junk... i'm betting you can move it over, but someone will probably chime in.

Good luck - and give it a go. The dealer will be big $$ and probably will be something you can do easy or with just a little pointer here and there!

The noise is coming from the chunk, I let it go for to long and figured there's something damaged beyond resonable repair. The pinion shaft moves in and out { front to back} a 1/4" or more and up and down or side to side with about the same 1/4" or so of play. Thanks for the replys so far.

87-96 has the ABS carrier. Pre 87 is possible to make work, but it requires some figurin. Doing an overhaul is not too tough. I would buy an 88 from eBay and overhaul yours then sell the original on eBay again. That is what I did for my rear axle.
