Hi folks- my 98 Expedition has developed a problem. The 4x4 dash light seems to be stuck on since the last time I put it in '4H'. If I switch it into 2H, A4WD, or 4L, the 4x4 light stays on. The dash clicks, pauses, and then clicks once per second for about 6 seconds, and then silence. Then the 4wd selector switch does nothing unless I turn the vehicle off and then back on again.
The vehicle DOES seem to be going into 4wd Low Range. It will 'clunk' as it should, and then I get lots of wheel noise turning on dry pavement (so it's def in 4WD mode) but the dash light still says '4x4' (not 'Low Range) and does that clicking dance.
Any ideas? Is it worth trying a battery disconnect to reset the computer?
i also have a similar problem. But mine says its in 4L. But I know its in 2wd. and I pulled the shift actuator motor off and its completely seized up.
I've heard that you can take it apart and clean it. Some people have luck doing that. But So far i haven't found any write ups or anything on it. Anyone know where one is?
