Blue Smoke?

Leaving my driveway this mourning I noticed alot of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust? Stoped coming out after about a 1/4 mile driving. It has been in the teens here in ct, but the truck was running for about 10min. prior to me leaving. I have noticed this only in the last few days. What could be the cause of this? My ebpv valve is getting stuck open also, can this be a cause?
Thanks

This is just a guess, but if your turbo is getting wore, or your rings are getting wore, idling for 10 min may be letting a little bit of oil build up in the intake and when you drive its just burning it off. Probably not much to worry about but keep an eye on it for sure. Im sure one of the other guys will chime in and tell you exactly what it is though

My truck has been doing the same thing for sometime now and I have not seen any oil consumption. I just relate it to unburned fuel or poor burn..... cause its so dam cold.

Your EBPV will stay closed untilol your truck gets up to temp, the other night the temp. dropped down to -39 celcius. when I pulled of the highway my truck was running fine but after 10 minutes of stop and go driving in the city my EBPV started to close. Its a pain to deal with this cause the truck is doggy while driving, if it opens up when youstep into the pedal or when the truck is running nice and warm then this would be normal, if its closed all the time then you have problems.

But yeah, with the smoke thing, I've smoked out my whole front yard with my truck, funny as anything watching the neibours drive by glaring at me as I'm destroying the environment.

Sould try starting a 6.0 powerstroke, I did it the other night with it not plugged in at -34 celcius, killed the batterys the first time, almost had it going, put the booster on it it and kept cranking for 45 seconds as itstarted to fire and then it started but man was that truck mad at me...........never seen so much BLACK smoke from a powerstroke

Wouldn't Bad Rings Cause A Blue Smoke Constantly? My 95 Ps Is Doing The Same Thing And Its Only Got 123,000 On It! I've Also Heard It Could Be Bad O-rings On The Injectors Letting Oil To Seap Into The Heads When Shut Down For A Little While. How Big Of A Problem Is The Turbo If It's Tired? What Do These Things Cost? I'm New To The Diesel Scene And I Can't Imagine My Rings Are Bad At This Milage? What About Plugs Or Gpr? Anyone? Bueller?

Blue smoke is common under cold temperatures especially with these older diesels. The OBS do not have intake heaters like the SD's.

My 97 smokes pretty good at start up when its 20 F and colder. Even if its plugged in it still smokes a tad after the initial cloud.

If your injector o rings were shot there would be a healthy amount of smoke.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Question

Thanks For The Reply, I'd Say It's Healthy (cloud Like And Large!)smoke Till You Run It Though The Gears Maybe Twice? Then The Smoking Stops Or Is Not Enough To Notice In The Mirror. This Is After I Let It Warm Up 10-20 Mins, It Doesn't Smoke While Warming Up, Except When You Rev It Up Quickly And Let Off? Why Would It Smoke When I Get Going? Is Oil Building Up And Not Burning Off Somewhere? This Just Bugs The #@$* Out Of Me Not Knowing Why.

Thanks,
Rsteeda

whats the history of the glow plug system? Anything replaced recently or is it still all factory stuff? I don't really think 10 mins at idle in cold weather is going to do a lot as far as warming it up. Mine was doing this a few years ago and I replaced the gp relay and was back to the way it was supposed to be. Does it start ok? Is it plugged in overnight? It sounds like its just not warm enough to burn off all the fuel. That would explain more smoke when you rev it or take off, you're dumping more fuel in there that it wasn't burning completley in the first place. I got my relay at intl for about $19 and EASY to replace. Hope this helps, and good luck.

I can idle mine for that amount as well and it still does it. Even if its plugged in for 12 hours it doesn't matter. What I look at is the pyro. When its idling like that the EGT's are usually under 200F. So when you start going through the gears and introduce that cold air into the engine it can't burn off all the fuel right away. Just because your engine temp is climbing doesn't mean that the combustion temp increases. It takes a good 10 min of driving to have my EGT's at 300 while idling.
