I have had my truck for 6 months and since I've had it, it has had a very slow leak. I find a drop hanging off of my bell housing everytime I park. There are never any puddles under my truck, maybe a drop every once in a while, indicating that the leak occurs when the engine is running. The fluid is brown and smells burnt.
My tranmission fluid is new, just changed it about a month ago (Redline Synthetic ATF). I checked the tranny fluid anyway, and its very red and does not smell burnt.
What other fluid might have a burnt smell to it AND be dripping from the bell housing? Also I noticed that now it is dripping from my front axel too, which probably rules out transmission, unless I have a busted cooler line but then I would probably be leaking quite a bit more.
crawl under there, clean everything you can, and then check pretty frequently to find it again....then its path of travel would be evident. since you say brown I'm thinking thats oil, why it smells burnt I dunno, but I'll bet your pan gasket is out in the front and the back, creating that leak on your axle too.
Yeah I've been watching it for a while (as has my brother) and we can't figure it out. I have cleaned everything up down there but I just can't see where its coming from. I don't think its motor oil because of the smell. And it is a real soft kinda light brown (almost like it COULD have been red at one point, but it sure doesn't look like it).
Oil dripping from rear of valve covers, heads, oil pan orrear main seal could drip down the bellhousing. Use a small mirror and check around the back of the heads.
if possible clean the motor. and start looking then. most likely it is the pan gasket though. mine spit out on my old sable and would smoke when i cornered.
