Of course I might not be the one to give you the best answers on how it does on a stock Explorer, but I run one on my 2007 Ranger also and all it has done is the K&N FIPK and Magnaflow dual catback. Out of the mods done to it, the XCal2 has done the best and been the best bang for the buck.
You can have a lot of different settings done on a tuner. I would definitely have the shift points tuned, and the powerband looked at. I run 3 different tunes (4 with stock settings) in the Ranger - 91+ performance, 89 performance/tow, and a 89 mileage. Because of the way the Explorer is set up, I only have 2 settings on it - 91+ daily and a 91+ racing.
Normally I would recommend finding someone locally that does tuners because that way if something is not right or you need to do a dyno tune, you have them local to do it. In a case where someone is basically stock, you can get one from anyone really. Motorhaven and Jusnes Modified are the two I would recommend.
