It seems that almost every person you talk to has a diferent opinion on what timing should be for a specific motor. For my '73 351w I've gotten 4 different numbers, Chilton has the wrong firing order and a nother number and the other rebuild book had yet a different number.
Is there a source that is more constant than another, and is it sometimes just what works for someone with trial and error. I always thought it was an exact science.
No matter what the factory spec is, you can't go wrong setting it at 10-12*BTDC. The 60's to 70's factory spec for just about all Ford V8's was 6*BTDC. Run it at either and you'll keep it advanced to 10-14*BTDC.
^ and you can keep advancing it until you hear a little knocking. From there, just back the timing off some or go with a higher fuel octane. Do not use this method if you plan to use a power adder of some kind (supercharger, turbo and/or nitrous).

Sounds good. The reason I ask is I can't get the motor to run with any power with out poping thru the carb (see my thread poping/squeaking thru carb) I've checked the firing order, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and I can't seem to get it to run worth beans.
