Ok it has been along time since i posted on here, but i just bought a 1990 f-250 4 x 4 with a 302 and a aod trans (auto) The problem i am having is when it is idiling it runs "great" and when i first take off it is hell on wheels, when i get up to speed around 40 or so and i go to punch it (to pass some one) it feels and acts like i am towing a 20 ton trailer, it just takes for ever to pass, the trans doesnt slip, the rear end is good. I am thinking that the cats are clogged, what do you guys thinks
If it sounds like compressed air leaking when you punch the pedal it's a good sign the cat is plugged.I've also seen mufflers collapse internally and act the same way.
Well, that's not a lot of motor for a big truck, so don't expect it to accelerate like a modern sedan. If it turns out you don't have a clogged exhaust or intake air filter, then maybe you are expecting too much.
No 4x4 auto truck is super at passing. BUT my F150 4x4 sc lb with maf 302 E40d passes just fine . It proforms just as well as my 92 F150 351 truck with out load. I'd check the cat . If it is supper peppy on low end check gearing if geared low you might be wound out RPM in passing . What the tach say
I run a F250 that we pull trailers with its geared low enough that in passing it is like putting on breaks. Good luck on fix.
Check the cats like you suggested, and change your fuel filter. My first guess would be your cats are plugged, that sounds exactly like how a freind's truck acted when they were plugged, it would idle just fine, but at a certain RPM the motor just couldn't push thru them any more.
Does your trans downshift when you punch it? Possibly you need a TV cable adjustment.
what about revving the motor in neutral?? if it doesn't bog down while revving it up while sitting still, i would say your tranny needs some help. first step would be to check the adjustment on the tv cable, then i would drop the pan and change filter out.
