I want to flush and change my coolant to an elc coolant. The more I research this topic the more confused I become a lot of conflicting info/views on various sites. I cannot find the shell elc red locally, I have found zerex go5 but the bottle lists it for 2002 and newer would this be alright in my 2001 PSD? I really want to get the right stuff in there the first time.
I have changed it in my truck. If I had a 2000 or so, I might be more nervous since certain serial numbers were not for the Zerex G05. Other than that, you should be fine.
I've also switched from the green to the gold Zerex G-05. I've searched day and night for the Peak Global red stuff and asked all my local parts suppliers and most of them looked at me like I was retarded. Ended up with the Zerex.
From what I have read (And will be testing myself so I can add more SCA if needed) is even the gold Zerex coolant from Ford has the bare minimum count of nitrate to protect against cylinder cavitation. Keep in mind, it's only good for 100k on the 1st fill from factory. So if you're swapping coolants (From green to gold, or flushing out gold and replacing with gold), it's only good for 50k.
Here's a quote from "Gooch" @ TDS that I found very helpful (Gooch is the ***** when it comes to coolant, he's the man to go to ):
"Look for the Fleetrite ELC at any International dealer. It is supplied to International by Shell (same stuff as Rotella ELC).
Look for the CAT ELC at any Caterpillar dealer.
Carriers of Exxon/Mobil products can get you the Mobil 1 ELC.
Any store that carries Prestone can get you the Prestone HD ELC.
Any store that carries Zerex can get you the Zerex HD Extreme ELC.
Any store that carries Peak can get you the Final Charge ELC.
There are a bunch of off-brands of HD ELC too. Look at truck stops, truck shops, truck dealers, equipment rental shops, lubricant distributors and jobbers, and quality auto parts stores.
