Well this is not a specific 385 series question but i was thinking it would be most appropriate to ask people who run these engines.
I have a 1986 f150 with a 300 six, granny low 4 speed (t18??) np208 xfercase and 3.55 gears.
Soon I will be swapping in a 460 and im wondering whether i would be most happy with rebuilding my clutch and getting that all working correctly (everything is worn and clutch chatters) or just swapping in a c6 auto. any suggestions would be great.
It's personal preference, sometimes swapping can be a PITA but then sometimes getting all the parts lined up for putting a clutch on a 460 and getting it all to work right can be equally a pain. So which ever you want for your personal taste or application is the one that would be best
I would run the 4 speed myself for the simple reason it "allows" you to run a bit of a more radical cam-grind than with an automatic. That holds true for small blocks as well as big.But really,it depends on the end use of the vehicle and the preference of the vehicle's driver.I like the simplicity of the manual gear box for a truck, auto's for the race cars and passenger vehicles.Manuals make you FEEL like your driving a TRUCK!!!
Your pref, though. good luck,I'm doin' the same swap myself.
