I decided to try replacing my timing chain and sprockets after some guidance from a few of you. Instead of getting to TDC before hand, I decided that I would use the marks on the pullies. Heck, I can't find any marks. What can I do to get it to TDC like it is now all torn down ? This is probably the most frustrating thing that I have done to this Bronco in the 230,000 miles on it but am getting almost confident.
It is Monday night and I need it fixed by Wednesday morning if possible so reply as soon as possible and make the wording as easy as you can.
Thanks for being online Dennis. I'll try it and see what happens. First, I have to somehow get a broken water pump bolt out of the block. I have been leery of this timing chain since people have said that you have to be sure you are at TDC and the marks have to line up etc...
You guys have one great forum. I have learned more in the past year online here than I have owning my 89 since 91 !!! If I had known about this forum, I could have saved myself many, many hours of headaches and buying a part and praying that it fixed the problem.
Thanks and I'll let all know what happens. Of cource it may be another day or so before I complete this project. As my dad used to say, this is character building. It may be but it also falls in the catagory of nerve racking.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Nov-02 AT 10:59 PM (EST)]thats how we lined ours up when we changed the chain. dis connect the coil wire, and bump the starter a little at a time. but there is a bad side... you have a 50/50 chance of getting the timing 180deg. off.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Nov-02 AT 00:36 AM (EST)]I actually put the main bolt back in without the washer so I can get the smaller lower gear off and was able to get it set at TDC !!!! Never thought I could do it though. Anyway, before I tear up something, how do I get the flat keyway or whateveryoucallit out so I CAN get the lower gear off ? I have no idea how this thing works.
I did it ! I FINALLY replaced the timing chain and gears. I am still having problems with the water pump bolt that broke off in the block. I can not get it out no matter what I do. Do I 100% need all bolts or can I get away with it like it is ? I was told that as long as I clean the old gasket off completely, I should have no problems with leaking etc... ? What do you think ?
if your goin to put it bact together -1bolt, i would use gasket sealer(permatex gasket maker) and wait 24hrs before you add water to to make sure it sets completely and hope it works. you might as well try, the worst it can do is leak ford usually has plenty of bolts holding stuff on, you prolly wont have a problem.. not sure havent broke a bolt yet *knock on wood* good luck
