I have a 1998 ford f-150 xlt, with a 4.6L and a 5 speed manual. i want to swap out the 4.6 with a 5.4 (300hp model) from the 06's. now im looking ata motor from an 06 with low kms. what will i need to make this happen?
bell housing? computer? what else will i need.
about 10-12g's should be a good start. this isn't the old days anymore when you could swap a 302 for a 351 in a weekend... the 5.4 hasn't ever been mated to the 5spd manual in my knowledge, so right off you need to get an auto tranny. one idea would be to find a salvage truck with the powertrain intact, and the proper harnesses, computer, etc. best thing to do...??? supercharge what you have...

In the broadest since of the term this is possible. It will be difficult and expensive though. I think your best option is to get a 99-04 5.4, install some cams maybe have the head ported and get a custom intake from Reichard or somebody. You would put more to the ground than with a stock 3V and have an easier time doing it.
If your determined to do the 3V then the best advice is to get a donor vehicle, you will have to worry with changing computers (if you want the variable cam timing to work) different radiator/ thermostat locations etc. The one thing you won’t have to worry about is the bellhousing its the same size on 4.6s and 5.4s.

I doubt that it would be that much, I know that it wouldn't be for the 99-04 swap if you have someone reputable do it. I swapped an 03 4V 4.6 into my mustang for 3500 including the price of the engine and the dyno tune.
What is the end result you are looking for? A daily driver with just a little more power, a racer, a towing rig? Are you planning to modify it further or leave it "stock"?
I don't think $10K+ is out of the question at all it will take quite a bit of custom work, I think it would be far easier to put 3V heads on a 2V PI engine and custom fab from that. If you want a manual tranny the SD 6spd will bolt up but there may be clearance issues with the floor. It would also be easier to just put a 305hp DOHC Navi engine in.
Id just get the 4.6 beefed up and add a super charger.
96Sherm: The 5.4 was bolted to a 5sp in the Super Duty's. Im not sure if thats the same tranny the 4.6's use in the F-150's. Maybe the swap wouldnt be so bad if you had a 5.4 Super Duty to get parts from? Just a thought.
Not the same tranny. The 5 spd. used in the 1/2 tons is not very strong. I wouldn't put a supercharged 4.6 or even a mildly modified 5.4 in front of it. It can live if you go easy on it (like that will happen with someone who is looking for the power), but what's the point. Get a different tranny if you want to add any significant power.
That's why it depends on what he's looking for. If he wants to take this thing down the strip once in a while, the Superduty 5 spd is likely the wrong tranny too.

10+k? How much are you assuming for the engine 8k?
The 3V head on a stock 2V short block is impossible. The pistons aren't clearanced for the valves. A warmed over two valve is capable of just as much or more power than a stock 3V. I have a weaknss for the 4Vs and I like your navi suggestion.
