Unknown T-Case Noise

'90 F150XLT 5.0L EOD 4x4 W/Lockouts - 167K

Recently during the major snow storm here in Michigan I needed to use my 4 wheel for the first time. Bought the truck in July and have not needed it until now. The 4x4 worked great, thankfully, but there is a noise coming from the t-case or atleast that area. At city speeds, did not take it on the highway, it makes a whirling or whining sound, like you get when you run gears very fast. The faster you go the louder it gets. I am not sure of the type of t-case that I have. Like I said everything is working but this sound has me nervous. I have had several other 4x4 both Ford and Chevy and have never heard this before. Also the next day after running in 4 wheel when I started it and put it in gear to back out of my driveway apparently the t-case was not engaged, nasty gear grinding sound. Puting it out and back in solved this but it should not have come out in the first place. Roads are clear for now so I am good but I really do not want to detonate my t-case when I really need it. Any thoughts? Oh yeah it does not make the noise as far as I can tell when it is not in 4HI. I have not unlocked the hubs so I know everything is still turning.

First thing I would do is change the t-case oil. That will give you an idea if you see metal shavings in there that it is bad enough to deal with in the cold. The noise could be anything, bearings, chainguide, chain. I would say after you check or change the fluid figure out if it can last another month or so until it warms up.

Good luck and let us know what you found.

Thanks Toyman for the suggestion. Believe it or not I never really thought about the oil. Some things you just take for granted I guess. It should last until it gets warm since I only drive it in town and as long as we don't get hammered again it should be fine. As soon as I can talk myself into crawling under it in the snow I will at least check and make sure there is oil in it.
