Lately, when it gets really cold out my steering has been really stiff, and feels liks something is binding up.I feel kind of like rough spots while turning the wheel. I have read that some people have experianced something similar and said that it was being caused by the ball joints getting stiff when cold. But this morning while on my way to work, I could barely make right turns. Also when turning left i have that binding feeling/rough spots. So I was thinking that it may be the steering box. So i loosened the adjusting screw on top of the box about a quarter turn, and it is no better. Is there anything else that could cause this? Any suggestions on how to check if it is the steering box?
I am at work, about 90miles from home any help would be greatly appreciated.
do you have a steering stabilizer up front? If so it could be worn out and is binding. Are your hubs locked? If so it would binding on turns when the pavement was dry. If it were ball joints that are bad, you would have other symtems, like front end wobble or shimmy in the wheel, noise and other symtems.
I went out and removed the steering stabilizer, and after it was out i noticed the shaft was bent. Steering is back to normal!!!!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im glad you goter taken care of, I wouldnt waste money on a replacement from Ford, you can buy aftermarket ones that will not bend, And wont cost as much to replace
Just becareful not all of the aftermaket ones will fit the stock brackets eventhough they say they will. I got one from autozone last week it was suppost to be a direct replacement after a little work with the grinder on the bracket and ubolt it is .
