Headers Question...

Guys I have installed some GT40 iron heads and a 302HO camshaft in my 92 F-150 successfully and I can tell you this, the truck has definitely came alive compared to what I used to run for stock My question is this, I bought shorties a while back before these engine component upgrades and was wondering if I need to go to long tube headers to get the full benefit out of my 4x4 truck being that the 302 needs all the low end grunt it can get for moving a heavy 4x4 truck? Other than having the local exhaust shop fab up some piping for me to run these long tubes on my truck, will long tubes clear just fine on our 92-96 F-150 trucks?

Yes, longtubes will help get the most out of the motor. As for clearance, the headers I have used fit easily with only minor frame clearance issues on the passenger side(nothing 30 seconds with the grinder couldn't fix), and I lost no ground clearance... The TTB trailing arms hang lower.

I take it you have the heads and cam installed using the truck intake? Do you have the 1.72 rockers on there as well?

the only ones who will have to worry about clearing arr the thorley tri-y pipes. They rub on my buddys 92 f-150 xcab short box. His rig is lifted, but where it rubs isnt affected by the lift. I think its a design flaw myself. You should be fine with the other major brands. This is just the only header i have seen that has had problems.

Yah I am using the truck intake Paul... I got a question for you though, will running those 1.7 roller rockers with the oil filler baffle gone going to mess anything up?

That's a good point. There should a small filter in you airbox for the plastic line that connects back to the valve cover. This normally will draw some oil out of the engine.. but it's a miniscule amount because the filler tube is mostly shielded by the baffle. What you have to do is test fit the rocker that is nearest the oil fill tube. I know on the cast mustang valve covers you have to remove the whole baffle, but these are smaller than the steel covers on the trucks. You may get away with just cutting a small amount off the baffle...just enought to clear the nearest rocker. You may not need to touch it at all!! it's hard to say for sure because different brand rockers have slightly different dimensions. If you need to cut use a dremmel with a cutting wheel and only remove what you have to.

I just wonder if the 1.7's will clear the truck valve covers... I know the pre 90's mustang cobra's used the 1.7 roller rockers as standard factory hardware on their 302 engines?

on my 92 f150 4x4 i have hedman elite long tube headers and on the driver side of the motor i had to heat them up and bend them over so they would clear the front drive shaft and on the passenger side they rub the frame a lil so if i were u i would look into some shorties like BBK..

I have flowtech long tubes on mine and they clear just fine, no modifications whatsoever.

I run the 1.7 cobra roller rockers part#M-6564-A50 on my alum. GT40 turbo swirl heads part#M-6049-Y303 with the aftermarket Ford truck valve covers part#M-6582-A351 and everything is fine.
