I went to change the plugs in my F-350 Sunday and when i got to the third plug on the driver side it snapped off in the head .I have tried to use ez outs to get the plug out and ti just seams like the plg is welded to the head.I have used wd-40 to try to loosen up the rust is there any thing left to do to get this plug out
I know no one will like to hear this, but i'd probably try a little bit o the old hot wrench. Just be reeeeealy carefull not to get anything too god awful hot, then hit her wit some PB blaster. if you have any doubts dont do this. as a hilbilly I tend to get away with more stupid stuff than others (I think)lol.
Hey Suck Creek offroad, I'm going thru the same thing right now with a 95 F-250HD w/351 in it. Mine was the front plug on the left side of the motor. I've been trying the EZ-Out too and its not working. I've been spraying it with PB Blaster. And I've been heating it up with a MAPPS Gas Torch!....I'm at my wits end. It looks like I'm gonna have to drill it out and Re-Tap it. Its a real bitch too cause you cant get at the damn thing. I dont want to pull the head. The problem with this design is Ford dosent use a damn gasket on the plug. Its a tapered seat. I use anti-sieze compound, and change the plugs every year. And it still broke Off...If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them........Good Luck
I was looking at that butch h. My problem seems to be everything is very rusty on this truck. The motor, and a lot of the hardware. I don't understand it. The body isnt that bad. Only minor rust. I've got one bolt holding the Air Filter box. The other three snapped off! I'm seriously thinking of pulling the motor, and putting a rebuilt in it. Its got 210,000 on the clock, and even though it runs excellent I cant deal with this crap breaking every time I try to work on it.
I would be curious to know what brand the plugs were that broke off?
They were Autolite Plugs. Just bought Champion Truck Plugs to replace them with. I've used them all. Bosch, NGK, Motorcraft, etc.. Like I said before, they have a tapered seat on the plug. So it seals right to the head. If it had a gasket on the plug chances are it wouldn't sieze as easily. There wouldn't be that "tight contact" between the plug and the head. Any amount of moisture gets in there, and your screwed. It seizes right up...A gasket between it would give you a little bit of leverage to loosen/tighten. And be able to remove it it without snapping it off.....
Got plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, ready to install in my 1996 F-150 4X4 302 5 spd. Been waiting for warmer weather, but now I'm getting nervous reading all the posts on plug removal. I'll start wd-40ing this afternoon
for broken plugs...I first drain the anti-freeze and then heat the broken off plug with a brazing - oxy-acetylene - torch...also heat the head in that area a bit...then hammer in a stout ez out and using a star socket on a ratchet...made for square stuff...gingerly back out the broken plug.....next time Im gonna try that candle wax thing too....might make it easier....then put anti seize on the new spark plug threads and seat before installing...shouldnt be a problem again.....maybe plugs should come with anti seize ...like o2 sensors
broken plugs and exhaust manifold bolts/studs must be common to these ford trucks...Ive had 5.8 and 7.5 liter 4x4s over the years and they both have this problem....the 300 six cylinders are all like new though...never had a problem
for me...its the Buffalo winter road salt that does this.....wish they would go to cinders on the roads like just over the border in PA.....as a side benefit...maybe the SUV drivers would slow down... if the roads had snow on them...
Dont think it matters much but i have never had a stuck plug before and Ive changed a lot of plugs in my life. I allways change my plugs when the engine is hot. Spray some liquid wrench, pb, or nuttsoff. then wrench away. Just my .02
If you end up having to drill, use a left-twist bit that is nearly the smaller diameter of the threads. Hit the spark plug with a center-punch first (get it centered!). If the left-twist catches, sometimes it will spin out the offending bolt/plug/etc. I've also drilled out bolt with regular right-twist bits, and everything just spiraled right out, but I've never snapped off a spark plug. U-joints and a plug socket help keep that from happening.
My plug was a Champion .I was using a plug wrinch .but the problem is that the plug broke off below the nut .I have went as far as ican do without pulling the engin so that I can get to the hole that is causing all the problems.I have looked at it if I blew a head gasket .To replace I wouldnt pull the engine I would Just jerk the head That is going to be a project for this week end.
Ive ended up having to replace the head .not onlt was the plug broke off in the head but the head was crackrd on the same cylender.Thans for all the help!!!
